Location:Xi’an Central Innovation District,China
Landscape Area:396,200 m2
Project Statement
The Yong‘an Canal was historically a canal for the citizens of Xi’an. The project aims to create an organic and reliable urban landscape system from three aspects: water systems, ecological health, and the rich river valley culture, restoring the historical glory of the Yong‘an Canal and making it a benchmark for future urban living, and thus supporting the construction of the Xi’an Central Innovation District(CID).
The planning proposal puts forward systematic research and planning, aiming to provide successful experience in tapping the potential of water areas, activating urban values, and combining regional culture and urban functions through the unique insights of designers from a macro perspective under the concept of low-impact development, and exploring flood safety management, regional water ecological systems, and historical and cultural inheritance.
The Yong’an Canal in the Tang Dynasty
The Yong’an Canal was the only canal in the "Five Canals" of the Sui and Tang Dynasties dedicated to the use of citizens. It was also the largest commercial and trade area in the ancient Silk Road of the Tang Dynasty, providing a precious and superior waterfront commercial environment for merchants and travelers from various countries. Urban planning and landscape design have enabled this disappeared river to be reborn, narrating the historical glory of the Yong’an Canal to the citizens.
The Silk Road Financial Sponge Water Corridor
The project is located in the core area of the Xi’an Central Innovation District, with a length of about 5 kilometers from south to north and a total land area of 39.62 hectares. It is designed to be a "sponge ecology, cultural life, and science and technology innovation" water corridor. The design is divided into three sections: River, Marsh, and Canyon, which are linked and integrated with various functional areas such as community residences, financial offices, cultural exhibitions, and commercial blocks, and meet the diverse needs of citizen for getting close to nature and leisure.
A Memorable Journey along the Canal
At the beginning of the journey, the arrival plaza is a large urban space, where water scenes provide an attractive focal point for the space, which can accommodate festivals or special events, and easily switch to large gatherings or events.
The Sky Mall Plaza would have multiple connections across the canal to access the adjacent retail outlets. A series of retail stores provide easily accessible food and refreshments, as well as a comfortable riverside environment. The commercial interface is integrated with the natural river valley, further activating the vitality of the canal.
Marsh, which through biological conservation and artificial filtration, purifies and utilizes the water of the entire canal system. It makes full use of the rich vertical relationship of the site layers, maximally converges the rainwater runoff from surrounding areas, creates seasonal wetland landscapes, and attempts to showcase them as part of cultural and educational experiences in nearby civic centers.
River is a water corridor for residential communities in the northern section. The water landscapes change with the seasons, connecting a series of residential areas through sponge strategies such as rainwater parks and green streets. Here you will experience a sense of home, peace, and tranquility, with tree-lined streets and greenery.
Ecology
The primary objective in landscape water system planning is to maintain ecological health and safeguard environmental quality.
Following the concept of low-impact development, a large urban sponge system is constructed. Sponge facilities such as rain gardens, depressed green spaces, permeable pavement, and permeable sub-base are built in the project, and the greenery mimics the natural process of water purification. The Yong’an Canal becomes a rainwater storage and drainage tank, collecting and utilizing rainwater as much as possible to reduce peak flow and providing space for flood and water storage regulation. Zero water discharge, achieved to protect and improve the urban ecological environment.
We reconstruct the "underwater forest + microorganisms" ecological system to fundamentally solve the problem of eutrophication of water. Through soil improvement, ecological embankment construction, underwater forest layout, hydraulic enhancement, and water cycle systems, we maximize the immunity and self-purification of the water.
Rich Canal Culture
The dramatic valley landscape is inspired by the unique canyon landscape of the Qinling Mountains, where natural elements such as canals, valleys, steep ridges, lake, waterfalls, etc. are transformed into the design language of site space and order, narrating the traditional and modern landscape of Chinese garden in culture and ecological nature. You will experience the time, movement, and energy brought by the canyon landscape.
The integration of the cultural themes of the canyon imprint and Silk Road finance presents a regional and diverse cultural corridor through modern and diverse techniques, demonstrating regional heritage and cultural heritage.
